About Kolossi Village
Visitors to the lovely island of Cyprus in the summer could be forgiven for thinking that the landscape in Kolossi is barren and unproductive scrub land dotted with prickly gorse bushes stretches to the horizon. However many olive trees and wonderful wild flowers are ever present.
Kolossi is a village on the outskirts of the city of Limassol, Cyprus. The settlement was built close to the imposing castle, which bears the settlement's name.
The Kolossi Castle is a stronghold a few kilometers outside the city of Limassol on the island of Cyprus. It held a great strategic importance and contained production of sugar, one of Cyprus' main exports in the middle Ages. The original castle was possibly built in 1210 by Frankish military when the land of Kolossi was given by King Hugh I to the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem (Hospitallers) (see also Commandaria), and the present castle was built in 1454 by the Hospitallers. Besides the Hospitallers, other dwellers in the castle include Richard the Lionheart, and the Templars.
The sweet desert wine of Commandaria is one of the oldest wines in the world. It's been around since the days of the Crusades and is only used for special occasions. The vineyards are in Kolossi near Kolossi Castle which is just a short drive from the centre of Lemesos.
The Oil Press of Kolossi was built and started operating around 1947. The area where it was housed was a donation of someone from Lofou -named Hadjichristofis -to the church of Apostle Luke, as well as the space where the elementary school is built. Later on the street, today's Apostle Luke Avenue, separated them. It is always operated under the administration of each church committee. In total, seven people work there and always someone from the committee was supervising; there was a clerk who recorded the takings from the "miloniatika" as we call them and 4-5 workers who would operate a post each in turns. It operated 24 hours a day and attracted many outlanders such as inhabitants of Pafos, Pissouri, and all the surrounding villages, because of its convenient -for transportation -position.
Travel out from Kolossi on a Saturday or Sunday you may pass by the popular Flea Market. Bargains can be found on various items including clothing, bags, perfume and much more.
