About Larnaca
Larnaca is on the east coast of Cyprus and where the islands main international airport is located. The visitors’ first site will probably be the huge salt lake which is situated just outside of the airport. If your visiting in the cooler months of the year you may be lucky enough to see the huge colonies of pink flamingos that make it their home for this cooler period.
Saint Lazarus Church is also located in Larnaca having being built on the spot where his remains are said to be found. It is said that Saint Lazarus chose Larnaca as his home in his second life after Jesus had raised him from the dead and was indeed made the first bishop of Larnaca. As you drive out of Larnaca towards the west you will also see the ancient aqueduct (Kamares - meaning arches) which was built in the 18th century to carry water. Other places of interest include the District Archaeological Museum, the Pierides Foundation Museum, and the ancient city kingdom of Kition and the 8th century Church Of Agia Faneromeni built over a rock cave.
Nearby Larnaka and within easy reach is the monastery of Stavrovouni. It is built on the top of a mountain and the views are breathtaking. It is also one of the oldest monasteries in Cyprus and in accordance with strict monastic tradition women are not allowed to enter. A life size Byzantine mosaic from the 5th century depicting the Virgin Mary can be seen at the church of Panagia Angeloktisi, one of the finest mosaics from this period in the world.
Moving on to the modern era, and to the Larnaca seafront. Finikoudes (palm trees) is the promenade which is very popular with the locals and tourists alike during the hot summer months. The tall aged palm trees line the promenade on one side and on the other there are countless cafes and tavern’s from one end of the promenade to the other At the entrance to the promenade can be found Larnaca Marina which is frequented by yachtsmen from all over the world. At the other end of the promenade you will find a 17th century fort which houses the Larnaca Medieval Museum.
