About Nicosia (The Capital)

Nicosia, also known as Lefkosia, is the capital city of Cyprus as well as the last divided capital in the World. It remains divided since the 1974 invasion by Turkish troops when 37% of Northern Cyprus was occupied. In recent years there is access to the north through various checkpoints on production of a passport or ID card.

The old city of Nicosia is within the walls which were built in the 16th century by the Venetians. Within these fortress-like walls can be found historical monuments, Taverns and old houses which take you back in time when you visit. Also within the walls, there are several museums. Amongst others you will find the Lefkosia Jewellery Museum, The Leventis Municipal Museum, the Municipal Art Centre and the Cyprus Museum which houses the islands most important antiquities from the Neolithic age to the Roman period.

Inside the walls you will find narrow streets and old houses as well as old workshops with the craftsmen practicing trade with methods of the past. Laiki Geitonia, which is a pedestrian only walkway, is the place for shopping in Old Nicosia. Ledra Street and Onisigorou Street being full of shops of every kind.

The modern city of Nicosia which has developed outside the walls is very cosmopolitan. It is the centre of business and culture and boasts to be the shopping centre of Cyprus as well as having many taverns, discos and bars to accommodate the visitor.

Nicosia is home of Haji Georgakis House. This is situated at the junction of Haji Georgakis and Gregoriou Street, inside the walls of the Oldf City. Originally it was an old palace that was renouated in 1793 by one Haji Georgakis Kornessios. Today the building and its gardens are classed as an ancient monument and are under multi-ownership-private and government.

Race Course

This is near St Paul's Street. Ayios Dhometios, to the west of the city. Race meetings on the flat are on Sundays for much of the year and on Saturdays during the months of June and July.
