About Souni Village & Zanadja
In the past, the village of Souni/Zanadja otherwise known as Zanatzia did not exist until the mid 1940’s, before that it was part of Sotira. The Sotira area was large and bounded by Ypsonas, Alassa, Agios Therapon, Kivides, Kantou and, Sotira, itself.
In 1945 the village of Souni/Zanadja (now one village) was established by seven families from Sotira and Vouni. The original houses were built of local stone and were small in size because for much of the day the villagers were out in the fields, and a small space was much easier to heat during the colder months.
The main activity of the village was farming, both arable and livestock. Fields were established and bordered by dry stone walls carob and olive trees were planted at the edges and wheat in the center. Small vineyards were also grown to produce local wine. Arable areas were kept separate from the areas of forest used to raise livestock for dairy and meat produce, goats, chickens, sheep and pigs were kept. There were no tractors and the main transport was donkeys.
Villagers would trade their surplus produce with others from different districts, thus obtaining such products as vegetables, fruit, etc. Little of this trade exists today, although you can still purchase goat’s milk and cheese from the village.
Two coffee shops were established on the main road, one below and one above the Souni turn off. Not only did the population socialize there but they would also be able to purchase fresh products such as milk and bread brought to the coffee shops daily by the local bus.
Prior to the establishment of the village of Souni/Zanadja there was an old church on the area adjacent to the existing church. The old church was constructed about 200 years ago and is reputed to be the first “Christian” church in the whole area. Thirty years ago the old church was demolished and the new church was commissioned, built and dedicated to the Archangel Michael. Today the church is used on important festivals and Sunday services are held alternately in Souni and Zanadja.
Souni Village
Today Souni is an expanding area with a current planned total of approximately 5,000 new homes. It has attracted many developers resulting in the construction of differing styles of dwellings most of which are finished either entirely or in part with local stone. As Souni expands the local infrastructure will develop to provide the facilities required by the growing population. The village now has two kiosks, an “English style” Pub serving drinks and food, an “English style” Tea Room, a Hair Dresser and a Cypriot run Coffee Shop / Restaurant.
Souni is, currently, the most popular location for purchasers within the Limassol area and is attracting new residents from England, Eastern Europe and Cyprus itself. The diversity of the new developments in style and size satisfying most needs, such as the award winning development of Country Rose which has annualy received awards for thier designer homes.
Souni is ideally situated. Whilst the village is off the tourist track, its close proximity to the main highway affords easy access to both the new airport at Paphos (40 minutes) and the airport at Larnaca (60 minutes). Limassol, the Island’s second largest town, is just 20 minutes by car. The village of Episkopi where you can obtain all your day to day needs is 10 minutes drive, and the local beaches at Curium are just 15 minutes from the village. The mountains of the Troodos are about 60 minutes drive to the north.
This gives Souni the advantage of a peaceful living style, quick access to theatres, cinemas, restaurants, other social & cultural attractions and access to tourist areas.
